Popular Nigerian actress and filmmaker, Eniola Ajao, has opened up about a deeply painful period in her life, revealing that she nearly poisoned herself as a result of false news shared about her online.
Speaking recently on Nollywood on Radio, a programme dedicated to Nigerian cinema, the actress disclosed that the online misinformation had severely impacted her mental health, pushing her to the brink of self-harm.
According to Ajao, that was the first time she had faced such a painful experience in her life.
She recounted how she went without food for seven days and it took the support of her son and loved ones for her not to poison herself.
The actress emphasised that, at the time, she was preparing for her next film. However, the online false news about her made it challenging for her to continue her work.

She said, “I almost poisoned myself because there was news about me online that was far from true. It was the first time in my life that I faced something so painful. I didn’t eat for seven straight days. People around me can testify – I didn’t go anywhere.
“My sisters were calling, telling me, ‘You have to do this for yourself. You don’t have to poison yourself.’ My son was reaching out to everyone, saying I was struggling with this lie online. I don’t even want to remember those things, honestly.”
It will be recalled that earlier this year, the actress became a trending topic on social media after popular crossdresser Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, was invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for currency abuse during her ‘Beast of two worlds’ (Ajakaju) movie premiere in Lekki, Lagos, on March 24, 2024.
