Big Brother Naija, Nigeria’s biggest reality show, has catapulted people to stardom, including Pere Egbi, a finalist in both Big Brother Naija Shine Ya Eye and Big Brother Naija All Stars seasons.
Rumours surrounding Pere began in 2021 during the Big Brother Naija ‘Shine Ya Eye’ season. Reports of him being abusive to his ex-wife surfaced after a clash with Whitemoney, a fellow housemate.
Despite denials from the reality star’s team, the rumours resurfaced during the 2023 Big Brother Naija All-Stars season when he faced challenging altercations that tested his patience.
During the 2023 Big Brother All Stars season, Pere faced a significant setback following a heated dispute with fellow housemate Doyin. The argument reached a boiling point, resulting in Pere punching a hole in the wall of the Big Brother house and subsequently guilty of violating rules on violence and property damage, earning him a strike.
In a separate incident, tensions flared between Big Brother Naija All Stars housemates Alex and Pere, taking an unexpectedly violent turn.
A viral video captured the duo arguing over a sleeping space, culminating in Pere forcefully throwing Alex against a wall. This incident, with Pere’s earlier altercation with Doyin, fueled public outcry, with many on social media calling for Pere’s disqualification.
Amidst the growing perception of Pere as a violent individual, the reality star took steps to address these misconceptions during a therapy session with Hero Daniel, using the ‘A Plethora of Thoughts’ card game.
“I am the last person to be violent,” Pere asserted during the session. He explained that, while in the house, he had been provoked repeatedly, often choosing to walk away or seek refuge in the diary room. Pere highlighted that Big Brother’s advice was to avoid the person causing provocation, but the continuous provocation eventually pushed him to react.
When discussing his anger management strategies, Pere shared that he tries to avoid being in a confined space 24/7 with someone who provokes him. Drawing on his military background, Pere emphasised that his training instilled patience in him, but he believed anyone in his position in the house would have reached a breaking point.
The conversation extended beyond the confines of the reality show, delving into Pere’s personal life. He opened up about his family background, the dynamics of his first marriage, and the impact of his father’s absence on his life. These revelations provided a more nuanced understanding of Pere’s experiences and the complexities influencing his behaviour.
A ‘Plethora of Thoughts’ card game
Concluding the session, Hero Daniels shuffled ‘A Plethora of Thoughts’ card game and had Pere pick a card.
Pere’s card contained advice: “When you are obsessed over whether you are making the right decision, you assume you will be rewarded for one thing and punished for the other. That is not how life works. There are a series of possibilities and outcomes that come with each decision made. Your life works around that decision. Letting go of the idea that there is a price to pay for these decisions will help you avoid the disappointments of not getting rewarded for what you thought was the right thing to do at the time’’.
Pere concurred with the advice and expressed optimism, acknowledging that the advice had provided him with a sense of reassurance.
‘A Plethora of Thoughts’presents a transformative experience, encouraging introspection, self-reflection, and personal growth. By offering thought-provoking prompts and engaging gameplay, the game empowers individuals to explore their emotions, confront challenges, and embark on a journey of self-discovery. It provides a safe and supportive environment for individuals to express their thoughts and feelings, ultimately improving their mental well-being.
