The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has arrived in Benue State following a gruesome attack in the Yelewata community of Guma LGA that left nearly 250 people dead.
The victims were reportedly burnt alive by suspected Fulani herdsmen, sparking outrage and renewed fears over insecurity in the state.

The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the IGP’s visit in a statement onMonday. “The IGP has ordered for additional deployment of tactical teams to tackle the security crisis.” His presence comes as a response to both the tragic loss of lives and the increasing tension across the state.

The attack, which took place near Makurdi, the state capital, is one of the deadliest in recent times.
Eyewitness accounts claim that the community was taken by surprise in the dead of night, with homes set ablaze and residents unable to escape the inferno. The aftermath left charred bodies, destroyed properties, and a traumatized population.
In response, hundreds of angry youths stormed the streets of Makurdi on Sunday in protest, calling for both national and international intervention. They demanded justice and an end to what they described as “targeted ethnic cleansing.”
Governor Hyacinth Alia, who earlier suggested the killings may be reprisal attacks, has also accused unnamed National Assembly politicians of sponsoring the violence.
The situation remains tense as security agencies intensify patrols and intelligence gathering.
The tragic event has drawn widespread condemnation, with many calling for urgent action to protect vulnerable communities and bring the perpetrators to justice.
