A group, Youths for Peace and Good Governance has called on the Inspector General of Police, IG Usman Baba Alkali to arrest and prosecute Hon Mike Enyong, one of the governorship aspirants in the May 2022 governorship primary of the Peoples Democratic Party in Akwa Ibom state for alleged display of lawlessness.

The group made the call in a statement signed by its President Comrade Joseph Udofia and Secretary Evang Emmanuel Etim respectively and made available to journalists in Uyo on Friday.

The call came following the federal high court judgement in Damaturu, Yobe state which on January 20 declared Mike Enyong as the governorship candidate of Akwa Ibom PDP as against the known candidate, Pst Umo Eno.

Enyong who did not participate at the Gubernatorial primary of the party held at the Nest of Champions International Stadium on May 2022 was said to have conducted a parallel primary in his house where he was declared winner.

Enyong, however proceeded to a federal high court in Damaturu praying the court to declare him the Akwa Ibom PDP flagbearer and to mandate the PDP to forward his name to INEC for the governorship polls by Match.

But the group in an open letter to the IGP which was obtained by our correspondent described the act as a rape on democracy and a bad antecedent for generation to come.

The group maintained that Enyong should be arrested for allegedly impersonating INEC, PDP and the Delegates during the primary he conducted in “his house.”

According to the group, “We condemn in strong terms the shameful display of lawlessness by Michael Enyong, one of the governorship aspirants in the May 2022 governorship primary of the PDP in Akwa Ibom state, and hereby call for his arrest with immediate effect.

“We all know that Baba Ntan boycotted the main governorship primary, recognized, monitored and approved by the PDP and INEC which was held at the Nest of Champions, and staged managed what he claimed to be another primary in his house. How can one explain this, that an aspirant who never showed up on the day of the primary now claimed he should be recognized as the party’s flag bearer? Testimonies abound that he hired people and paid some to act as PDP agents, returning officers and INEC officials.

“Such act of impersonation, especially of an institution as revered as INEC and a political party established by law is the height of lawlessness, which justify our call on the Inspector General of Police to arrest and prosecute Michael Enyong in line with section 480-489 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.

“This is the same tactics Senator Akpabio allegedly played during the election of party officials in APC, where a certain person won the election, only for the list to be manipulated and used by them to obtain a court judgment. If this precedence is allowed to fly freely, our institutions will be publicly impersonated at will.

“This social vice must be nipped in the bud to forestall a recurrence, by bringing to book those found guilty of the criminal offence.
The rule of law must be allowed to thrive in our society if we must set a good example for posterity. Those who are planning to tow similar line like Mike Enyong should be deterred from doing so when they know that the law has caught up with those who took laws into their hands.

“Even the Holy Bible clearly admonishes that he that breaks the edge, the serpent shall bite, and nobody plays with fire in his bossom without being burnt. It is on this strength that we have re-echoed our position that the Inspector General of Police should as a matter of urgency, order the arrest and prosecution of Michael Enyong, and put an end to this version of lawlessness in our society, which is gradually becoming a norm. This should be followed to the latter. Continue Reading
