An interim licence has been granted to Orashi Electricity Company Limited to generate, transmit, and distribute an uninterrupted electricity supply in all parts of Imo.

The Imo State Commissioner for Power and Electrification, Engr. Nwabueze Oguchienti disclosed this on Thursday in Owerri.

He said the ceremony marked a crucial step forward in the Hope Uzodimma-led administration’s efforts to ensure a constant and reliable electricity supply in Imo State.

He said: “you are aware that the government of Imo State has since started the process of taking over the electricity market in the state and all of this started with the constitutional amendment last year of Electricity Act of 2023 which now gives the states the power to manage the power sector in the state.”

He said that the governor commenced immediately in ensuring that the necessary legal works are put in place adding that they had to constitute the regulatory commission.

He described the move as an important step towards dealing with and solving erratic power supply in the state.

He said: “I can assure you that in the next one year,  it will be a different story in the state because we are committed to have a changed narrative when it comes to power supply.”

In his speech, while presenting the licence to Orashi Electricity Company, Chairman of the Imo State Electricity Regulation Commission (ISERC), Hon. Sam Nwaire, highlighted that this development positions Imo State as a frontrunner in electricity regulation among Nigerian states, paving the way for a more robust energy sector.

He said: “With the approval of the board on Tuesday,  we came out with the order to give the interim licence to Orashi. This action places Imo state as one of the forerunners in the electricity regulation of States in energy sector in Nigeria.”

Adding his voice, the General Manager,  Orashi Electricity Company Ltd,  Valentine Obumeyan commended the State Governor,  Hope Uzodimma for his vision and mandate given to them to execute the project.

He said: “Our mandate is to ensure a stable electricity supply in all the 27 local government areas of the state within a year.  This is the vision of the governor and we are ready to give him all our support”.
