The Lagos State Government has announced plans to begin slaughtering 3,000 cows daily at a new logistics hub in the Imota area of the state.

This was disclosed by the state’s Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, during an interview on Channels Television’s special programme, Nigeria’s Challenging Economy: Strategies for Recovery, held to mark the nation’s 64th independence anniversary.

The deputy governor emphasised the need to improve the current livestock management system, noting that the initiative would enable easier tracking of livestock entering the state.

He also highlighted the government’s efforts to enhance food security, stating that plans are in place to stock grains for Lagosians, with a goal of sustaining citizens for at least nine months.

The new hub is part of the state’s broader strategy to improve agricultural logistics and ensure a steady supply of meat and other food products to the commercial capital.

Hamzat said, “We are building a logistic hub in Imota, the biggest in this part of the world. What that does for us is that it allows us to track what comes to Lagos.

“So Lagos interestingly will slaughter cows like 3,000 every day. So where are they coming from? How can we track it? Today, if anything happens, our veterinary doctors slaughter then and burn them up. But we need to do better.”
