The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has urged all Igbos wishing to come home during the Christmas period to do so, as they promised to provide adequate security.
IPOB also reiterated their commitment to ending insecurity in the South East region.
In a statement issued by IPOB spokesperson Comrade Emma Powerful, he said the group is encouraging Ndi Igbo who wish to return home to enjoy the Christmas season as usual, assuring that the Eastern Security Network (ESN) operatives will provide a peaceful atmosphere during the festive period.
“Alaigbo is a very peaceful region. IPOB encourages our people to contribute to ensuring that Alaigbo remains peaceful. We need peace to thrive as a strategic economic hub in Africa. Every Igbo man and woman must work towards peace and security in Alaigbo. Alaigbo cannot be allowed to be in disarray while other regions seem to enjoy peace and security, even if they are not exactly peaceful. The Nigerian government provides security in other regions but comes to occupy and subjugate the South East Region. The presence of Nigerian security forces in our region makes us vulnerable and creates more insecurity. IPOB will provide security for the land . IPOB has called on Ndigbo to return their investments home to encourage further development and employment for Igbo youths. We are committed to ensuring that these investments are secure. To this effect, IPOB cautions criminal elements to stay away from Alaigbo, particularly during this Christmas season. IPOB volunteers and ESN operatives are working hard to make land uncomfortable and unworkable for both state-sponsored and common criminals,” the statement read.
IPOB also called on the Nigerian government and security forces to stop sponsoring insecurity in the South East Region as a means to continue their militarisation of the area.
According to the statement, IPOB called for the dismantling of all indiscriminate and illegal military, police, and other checkpoints in the South East Region.
The statement added that the countless numbers of police and military extortion checkpoints are frustrating motorists and all travellers.
It further stated that the military and police officers at these checkpoints are intimidating, harassing, and humiliating people who travel the roads in South East land.
“The ESN operatives will help to provide security across Igbo land bushes and forests so that criminals will not use our forests as a safe haven for their nefarious activities. All Biafrans are free to contact ESN operatives when the need arises, using the published security contact numbers,” the statement added.
