The Kano State Commissioner for Women, Children, and the Disabled, Hajiya Aisha Lawan Saji Rano, has urged the husbands of VVF (vesicovaginal fistula) survivors to support and stand by their wives, regardless of the extent of urinary tract damage they are dealing with.

She made this appeal during the distribution of support packages and items to 50 VVF survivors at the VVF Hostel in Kwalli, Kano Municipal.

In addition to empowering the 50 VVF survivors, the distributed items included sewing machines, grinding engines, popcorn-making machines, provisions, and cash.

Hajiya Saji congratulated the VVF survivors and urged them to make judicious use of the empowerment packages and items presented to them, as they continue to accept their predicament in good faith.

She stressed the importance of men supporting their wives during this challenging time of VVF, noting that shunning or rejecting their wives during this critical period would only compound their problems.

She stated, “Remember, every VVF victim was taken to her husband’s house as a healthy bride, full of hopes and dreams. What she later becomes is mostly the direct result of prolonged labor following attempts to give birth to your own child.”

Hajiya Saji also praised Governor Yusuf’s prompt response to health matters and other psycho-social services, citing instances where the Governor ordered quick interventions to address critical situations.

Earlier, the Founder of Laure Fistula Foundation, Baba Musa, expressed happiness over the event, which he said was the 50th of its kind since its inception several years ago.

Baba Musa disclosed that the state’s VVF repairers are rated the best by the international community and appealed for increased government funding for VVF repair and timely re-engagement of specialists after retirement. He said, “This will help avoid situations where victims from the state have to travel to other states for repairs, risking socio-religious dangers.”

The Officer-in-Charge of the VVF Center, Kwalli, Hajiya Aisha, appreciated the efforts of Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, in feeding the inmates of the center. She noted, “Repair training and subsequent empowerment would not have contributed to today’s success without the government’s crucial support in feeding the inmates.”

Some beneficiaries who spoke at the occasion thanked and prayed for Governor Yusuf, the Commissioner, and Baba Musa for sharing in their pains and making tireless efforts to help them overcome their painful past.
