The Kano State Government (KNSG), in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has distributed relief materials to 553 households affected by the 2024 windstorm in the state.
The relief items distributed include 1,450 bags of 25kg rice, 1,450 bags of 25kg maize, 100 cartons of vegetable oil, 100 cartons of seasoning cubes, and 100 bags of iodized salt. Additionally, 1,450 blankets, 1,450 nylon mats, and 1,450 treated mosquito nets, among other essentials, were provided.
While flagging off the distribution to victims from Minjibir and Gabasawa Local Government Areas, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the State Commissioner of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi, called on communities to prioritize safety by clearing drainages and avoiding the disposal of refuse into waterways.

He highlighted that Kano had conducted stakeholders’ meetings, awareness programs, and sensitization campaigns to avert flooding in the state and commended the Federal Government and NEMA for their support.
The Director-General of NEMA, Hajiya Zubaida Umar, stated that the donation was part of the Federal Government’s efforts to support disaster victims and aid in the swift recovery and revitalization of affected communities.
Speaking on her behalf, NEMA Kano Territorial Office Coordinator, Dr. Nuraddeen Abdullahi, explained that the relief materials were intended to provide comfort to the victims.
“While these items cannot fully compensate for the damages and losses you have suffered, they are a small gesture to show that the Federal Government stands with you in your time of need,” Umar said.
The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Alhaji Isyaku Abdullahi-Kubarachi, urged beneficiaries to use the items responsibly.
He also encouraged Kano residents to be more patriotic and to rededicate themselves to the development of the state.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Laure Yahaya from Gabasawa Local Government expressed gratitude, noting that the items would greatly alleviate the hardship faced by the windstorm victims.
