Kano governor, Abba Yusuf, has paid the registration fees of 1,740 newly admitted students at the state-owned Saadatu Rimi University of Education, Kumbosto.
Making this known on Saturday, Governor Yusuf stated that the state government was fully committed towards supporting education needs of students regardless of political affiliation.
The State Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr Ibrahim Yusuf Kofar Mata disclosed this while speaking on behalf of Governor Yusuf, during the Maiden Matriculation ceremony of the newly admitted Students held at the University in Kano.
According to him, the state government has also allocated 30 per cent of its 2024 budget to education, a significant increase from previous years.
Dr Kofarmata explained that the state government has waived 50 per cent of school fees for state secondary and tertiary institutions to make education more accessible to vulnerable children.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Yahaya Isa Bunkure, commended Governor Yusuf’s dedication to education and highlighted the University’s achievements, including staff development programmes, research initiatives, and infrastructure upgrades.
He then encouraged the matriculating students to approach their studies with diligence and determination, recognising the significance of their time at the University.
Bunkure also received a Fellowship award from the Nigerian Institute of Physics (FNIP) for his contributions to the field of Physics and his commitment to research and education. –
It be recalled that in 2023 the National Universities Commission (NUC) approved the upgrade of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education in Kumbotso, Kano State, to a University of Education.
