Kogi State Government has commended Sightsavers Nigeria for its successful eye care programme in the state, which was conceptualised in 2005 and implemented in 2020.

The programme, which was implemented in collaboration with the Kogi State Ministry of Health, Kogi State Primary Health Care Development Board, and other partners, achieved significant milestones by training doctors in ophthalmology, establishing comprehensive eye care centers in Ankpa and Kabba, distribution of free eye glasses to over 3,000 people and screening and treatment of thousands of people for eye diseases.

Speaking at the Kogi State Eye Care Programme Close-out Ceremony in Abuja, organized by Sightsavers Nigeria, Dr. Abdulazeez Adams Adeiza, Commissioner of Health, Kogi State, praised Sightsavers International for its commitment to improving eye care services in the state.

“We are grateful for the support and resources provided by Sightsavers International, which has enabled us to establish comprehensive eye care centers, train doctors, and provide equipment and resources.”

“We are committed to sustaining the achievements of this programme and ensuring that the people of Kogi State continue to have access to quality eye care services.”

Dr. Adeiza also assured that the state government would ensure the timely release of funds for blindness prevention, retain and maintain the donated Hilux van for logistics, and implement the finalized sustainability plan to ensure the continuation of the programme.

“We will also collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Health Eye Care Unit to seek a new partner to continue the programme and fast-track the actualization of the MOU between FTH and MOH,” he added.
