The long arms of the law have caught up with a 27-year-old Lagos-based driver, Aliyu Mohammed, who stole his boss’s Toyota Highlander with registration number LSR102GU and drove it to Minna, the Niger State capital, for sale, after which he was arrested by police operatives attached to the Tactical Support Team of the State Police Command.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated this in a press statement issued and made available to journalists on Monday in Minna.
According to the statement, “On 9/11/2024 at about 2130hrs, following credible technical intelligence received, police operatives attached to the Tactical Support Team of the Command trailed and arrested one Aliyu Mohammed, 27 years, of Bida, around Tunga area of Minna, with a Toyota Highlander vehicle bearing a Reg. No. LSR 102 GU.”
It noted that during interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to being a driver working in Lekki, Lagos, and that on the same date, he drove his boss, who was traveling to the airport, but decided to steal the vehicle and bring it to Minna.
“He further confessed that he called his boss and told him that he had been robbed of the vehicle on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos, to cover up,” the statement added further.
The image maker of the State Police Command, Abiodun, said the intention of the suspected 27-year-old driver was to take the vehicle to Kaduna the following day, where he could sell it quickly and return to Lagos, before he was arrested in Minna.
The suspect was further quoted as having claimed that he had been working with the victim for over three years and was being paid seventy thousand naira (N70,000.00) as a monthly salary, adding that yet he was not satisfied. Against the backdrop of the fact that he needed money to join a football academy in Abuja, this was his reason for stealing the vehicle.
SP Wasiu Abiodun, however, assured that the suspect is under investigation at the TST unit of the Command.
