The Lagos State Government has begun the large-scale demolition of Pelewura Market on Lagos Island as part of an urban development initiative.
Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced on Friday that the demolition is accompanied by compensation payments to traders.
Gawat posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, explaining that the action was necessary to align the market area with the state’s urban development plans.
“The Lagos State Government through the Urban Development Office, The Lagos Building Control Agency has taken over Pelewura. Compensation payment ongoing,” he stated.
He further explained that the demolition is in line with similar efforts made for Massey Hospital, and that the same plan will be applied to other markets such as Bombata and Jankara.
According to Gawat, the condition of Pelewura Market no longer fits the state’s vision of a modern market.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, during the presentation of compensation to victims of the Docemo fire incident, approved the demolition and pledged that those impacted by the market’s removal would be compensated.
