Prominent Lagos indigenes, under the aegis of De Renaissance Patriots Foundation, have commended the Federal Government for the direct release of monthly allocations to constitutionally recognised Local Government Areas (LGAs) across the country, describing the development as a significant step forward.

De Renaissance Patriots Foundation gave this commendation on Tuesday in a statement jointly signed by its President, Bolaji Are, and Secretary-General, Yomi Tokosi, stating that now that the Federal Government, through the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), has begun releasing monthly allocations directly to LGAs, Nigerians can hold elected council members accountable for their actions and failures.

The group of indigenous Lagosians, while recalling that some of its members had been advocating for this initiative, expressed hope that the state’s counterpart funding to local government authorities would also be made available.

The group noted that it expects gradual progress and improved service delivery at the grassroots level, expressing excitement about this development. It specifically noted that the allocations for LGAs in Lagos State were directly made to the 20 local government authorities in line with constitutional provisions.

“We will continue to be interested in the day-to-day administration of these local authorities in our state to ensure that no scripted backdoor arrangements are made to arm-twist LGA chairmen to whom these allocations are paid on paper.

“At any rate, this is the most interesting news of the month, and it is simply what we have advocated for—to ensure that what should get to local authorities in our state gets to them, enabling them to deliver governance at the grassroots level of government,” the statement said.
