Lagos lawmaker empowers youths, women with skills acquisition

Member representing Eti-Osa Constituency 02 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Honourable Gbolahan Yishawu, has empowered youths, market women, traders, among others through various initiatives, just as he expressed commitment to the development of the constituency despite challenging times.

The lawmaker expressed the commitment at the combined 12th GOY Micro-Business and Entrepreneurship Support Programme and the third Human Capital Development Skills graduation ceremony, which took place on Saturday at Obalende area of the state.

During the event, about 76 women graduated from the Women’s Vocational Training Programme, 18 received start-up tools in recognition of their exceptional performance.

Yishawu also celebrated the achievements of 38 students who completed digital training in fields such as graphic design, data analysis and digital marketing, with the top-performing students among them awarded laptops to further their careers.

Highlighting the ongoing various community projects, the lawmaker said his vocational training programmes had empowered over 2,500 students, in collaboration with state’s Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA).

He said the Yishawu’s Human Capital Development Hub has graduated 194 students in less than 10 months, equipping them with vital digital skills, while over 300 artisans had been supported with essential tools through the GOY Artisan Trade Enhancement Programme, with more than 10,000 students provided with free JAMB forms through the Tertiary Institution Admission Grant Programme.

On his community-focused efforts, Yishawu disclosed that petty traders, with over 800 micro-businesses had received support, saying that more than 2,000 elderly and widows were benefiting from cash assistance and food donations through his Aged and Widows Support Programme.

The lawmaker, who also supported the Lagos Island Skill Acquisition Centre with a donation of N250,000, reaffirmed his commitment to the growth and wellbeing of the people of Eti-Osa.

The beneficiaries appreciated the lawmaker for his continued support, especially during current economic challenges.

A female shoemaker, Justina Angelo, who received a file machine, said she studied nursing at the College of Health Technology in Mubi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, but had to venture into shoemaking as she couldn’t secure a job with her certificate, noting that skill acquisition is what is “sustaining us in Nigeria now.

“So, I decided to pursue shoemaking and I’ve been in the business for five years.,” said Angelo”

Other beneficiaries who received generating sets, tools for mechanical work and hairdryers also expressed their gratitude, saying the lawmaker had consistently supporting the community.

The General Manager of Lagos State Printing Press, Mr. Kolawole Peregrino, offered a job to one of the graduates and encouraged them to make use of the opportunity.
