Lagos model college, Badore emerges winner of 2024 Governor’s quiz competition

The Lagos State Senior Model College, Badore has emerged the winner of this year’s senior category of the Governor’s quiz competition organised among public school students in Lagos State.

The school defeated all other schools across the six educational districts of the state including Ilupeju Senior Grammar School, Ilupeju and Eva Adelaja Senior Secondary School, Bariga, which came second and third respectively in the category.

Similarly, Vetland Junior Grammar School, Agege, and Igbeyinadun Primary School, Mushin, won the junior secondary and primary school categories, respectively.

While the former defeated Eva Adelaja Girls Junior Secondary School, Bariga and Oregun Junior High School, Oregun which came second and third respectively, the latter defeated Maryland Primary School, Kosofe and Fazi-lo-ma Primary School, Lagos Island, which took the second and third position respectively in their category.

They were all emerged champions at the grand finale of the competition held on Wednesday at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja.

The Lagos Governor’s Quiz Competition is being organised annually by the state’s government as part of the co-curriculum activities to produce total students across the three levels of education in the state.

The students competed from the local government level across the state and moved to the district level before the finalists emerged for the grand finale.

They competed in various subjects including English Language, social studies, current affairs, mathematics, basic science and computer.

Speaking at the event, the Lagos State governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo- Olu, who was represented by the state’s Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, expressed great pleasure about the improved state of education in the state.

He said the positive turnaround recorded in the state’s education sector in the recent years has yielded tremendous results.

According to the governor, his administration is not only passionate but very determined and committed to ensuring quality and quantitative education are provided for the people of the state.

Sanwo-Olu commended the ministry of education which is in charge of the annual quiz competition, saying the initiative has become a veritable platform to advancing quality education and raising younger generation to become great leaders.

According to him, knowledge is not only tested by written or summative exams, but also by adopting other means such as quiz, panel discussion, project works, to further develop students for a real life challenges.

He emphasised that to produce self-reliant and globally competitive youths required the education system to be re-engineered and schools repositioned.

“That is why I am convinced that forum like this quiz competition will ultimately develop the students with the skills of concentration, identify gaps in knowledge, assist them to retain information and boost their self-confidence,” he added.

He, however, congratulated all the winners and other students as well as their teachers, saying their postures and performance at the event demonstrated that real learning and teaching are taking place in their schools.

He urged the students to remain focused in their studies, promising that the state government would continue to provide and support them with what they need to thrive and become positive change agents in the society.

He also urged their teachers to strive harder in their responsibility to nurture the students.

Earlier, in his welcome remark, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr Abolaji Abayomi, who was represented by Mr Olufemi Ashaolu, a director in the ministry, re-emphasised that the state government is very committed to produce fit- for- purpose students.

He said education development is one of major priorities of the state government, hence its huge investment in the sector.
He urged the students to work harder as they go back to their schools.

The highpoint of the event was the presentation of prizes to the representatives of the winning schools based on their performance.

Their prizes included trophies and gift items.
