A Bauchi-based non-governmental organisation, Langa Women Development Initiative, in collaboration with the Voice of Women Empowerment Foundation, has organised a 2-day activity to communicate the 2023 16-Day Activism campaign.

The event was held at the Tangale Community Development Secretariat, Dass Road, Rafin Zurfi, Bauchi, on Thursday.

The Executive Director of Langa Women Development, Maikudi Grace, stressed the need to unite to fight all forms of gender-based violence against women and girls, considering their fragile nature.

She further stressed that the theme for the 2023 celebration, ‘Unite: Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls’ was appropriate at this time when sentiments must be pushed aside for a better society.

According to her, women and girls have been exposed to various forms of violence and are forced to suffer in silence, thereby the need for unity of purpose to fight the menace.

Maikudi Grace then called on partners to give women and girls the required voice to enable them to speak out and be heard by society.

In a goodwill message, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) stressed that the church has been at the forefront of fighting gender-based violence against women and girls in various ways.

CAN, however, stresses the need for attitudinal change by the women and girls in society in order not to attract any form of

Also speaking, Dan-Iyan Bauchi, Suleiman Ahmed Bashir condemned gay marriage, which is a form of violence and unacceptable in a society like Nigeria, which is full of religious activities.

The traditional ruler, who spoke from the point of view of a Muslim cleric as a member of the Jammatul Nasir Islam (JNI), said that no religion allows any form of violence, not to mention gender-based violence against women and girls.

He stressed the need for unity, love, and cooperation if human rights must be protected and promoted within society, saying that violence is not only against women and girls but generally against humans.

According to him, “We need to respect and tolerate each other to move on as a progressive society. We don’t have any other country but Nigeria; we must unite to salvage it together.”

The State Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development commended the Langa Women Development Initiative for organising the event and ensuring that it will continue to support activities that promote gender equality.

The Ministry added that it will not relent in promoting all activities that give protection to women and children to ensure that they have a normal life, stressing that everything humanly and administratively possible will be done to reduce gender-based violence in the state.

The media assured that it would remain a voice for the voiceless by reporting issues of gender-based violence against women and girls to have a wonderful and peaceful society.

Speaking on behalf of the entire media, a CSO from the Journalists for Public Health Development Initiative (J4PD) stressed the need for relevant NGOs and CSOs to encourage victims to speak out to curb reoccurring violence.

J4PD then assured that it will continue to partner with Langa Women Development in promoting women’s and children’s development for a better society.
