President Bola Tinubu, in a heartfelt tribute, has honoured the late Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, who passed away on April 11, 2024, calling him a “perfect gentleman” and a dedicated leader in the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Tinubu emphasised Onu’s significant contributions to the party and the nation in a statement dated October 20, 2024.

President Tinubu recalled how Onu was instrumental in the emergence of the APC, uniting various factions of the political landscape in 2015.

At that time, Onu’s All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) was struggling, but his efforts to align with the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), according to the president, led to the formation of the APC.

“Dr. Onu provided leadership and direction within our party,” Tinubu stated, adding, “We owe him a debt of gratitude for his critical work in the birth of our party and for our achievements since then.”

Tinubu highlighted that the APC has since produced two presidents, including himself, and reiterated the importance of continuing Onu’s legacy through good governance and national progress.

“As leaders of our party and nation, we must strive to uplift the living standards of our people and carry forward Dr. Onu’s vision for a greater Nigeria,” he urged.

Beyond his political impact, Dr Onu was also recognised for his role as the first civilian governor of Abia State, where he laid a strong infrastructural foundation for future administrations.

Tinubu praised Onu as a prolific author and a brilliant administrator, noting his lengthy tenure as the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, which lasted from November 2015 until his resignation in 2022.

“His genuine impact on the nation was felt across various sectors,” Tinubu remarked, recalling Onu’s soft-spoken demeanour and his ability to connect with people.

“His absence will be deeply felt by this nation, his family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.”

Tinubu expressed gratitude on behalf of the nation for Dr. Onu’s invaluable services and contributions, praying for his soul to rest peacefully.

He urged the public to honour Onu’s memory by striving for the ideals he held dear, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations.

Onu died on April 11, 2024.
