The Federal Government through the Ministry of Interior has empowered the Landlords Voice Association of Nigeria (LAVAN), to ensure all landlords of properties adhere to the stipulations of the Fire Service Act.
The approval was conveyed through a letter by the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Deputy Director, Garba L.M, on behalf of the Minister of Interior.
The letter with a title: ‘Re-Request for the Ministry Approval on Fire Safety’, “I am directed to refer to your letter dated 18th March 2024, and to convey the Honourable Minister’s approval on the subject. I am to add that you comply with the Federal Fire Service Act Cap F29 LFN of 2004, as well as other extant laws and collaborate with other relevant stakeholders.”
Speaking at a press conference on the subject, the National President of LAVAN, Pastor Folala Vincent Ogidan, said; “This is about fire safety protection. And the general public is hereby urged to forthwith adhere strictly to the Fire Safety Law.
“The general public should know that the Federal government has granted LAVAN the authority to carry out implementation operations, monitoring and compliance of the Act. We are to make sure that all landlords of properties, market shops, schools, churches, mosques, hotels, gas-selling outlets, offices etc comply. The intent to reduce the rate of sudden fire outbreak disasters in the country.
“LAVAN has already established Fire Safety Protection Task Force Unit, to enforce the law. They will look out for defaulters and will lock up shops, markets and business places that fail to comply.”
LAVAN leadership fighter said that the safety of life and properties is sacrosanct and with incessant outbreaks of fire accidents here and there, it is only reasonable that owners of properties take the Fire Safety Protection Law seriously. He went on to urge for compliance, adding that LAVAN has not intention to disrupt peoples’ businesses or places of work.
