Oyo governor Seyi Makinde, on Wednesday, signed into law the bill changing the name of the First Technical University, Ibadan, into the Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan.
The signing held at the executive council chambers of the Oyo governor’s office, Ibadan, had in attendance, Mr Idris Ajimobi, son of the late former governor in whose name the university was renamed.
Speaking, Makinde said the state executive council approved the repealing of the 2012 law setting up the institution to capture the name change as well as institutional and structural changes.
To strengthen governance in the university, Makinde promised to constitute the governing council of the institution soon, to “continue the work started by the late pro-chancellor of the university, Professor Oye Ibidapo-Obe.”
To further honor the Ajimobi family, Makinde said she had spoken to the wife of the late governor, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, to nominate one member of the council,l, and she had nominated Honourable Seyi Adisa.
The event saw Makinde announce that he had approved the sum of N1.4 billion for the upgrade of infrastructure in the university.
Makinde promised that he would continue to make available subvention for tertiary institutions in the state as well as funding for capital projects in the institutions.
Speaking on behalf of the Ajimobi family after the event, Mr. Idris Ajimobi expressed appreciation to Governor Seyi Makinde for the honor done to his dad.
He assured that the Ajimobi family would continue to do its bit to support the progress and development of the Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan.
The event was attended by people from the executive, legislature, judiciary, organised labour, and religious circles, amongst others.
