Tragedy struck in Osogbo, Osun State capital on Saturday, when a middle-aged man, Femi Apatanku committed suicide by jumping into Osun river at Gbodofon bridge, Osogbo, along Osogbo- Gbongan- Ibadan road of the town.

The deceased, the only son of his parent and a native of Ilesha according to the Nigerian Security And Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC),

The incident which happened around 10.30 a.m of the day according to eyewitness accounts, forced residents around the area to quickly run towards the deceased to prevent him from taking his own life, but before they could reach the place, he had already committed suicide.

It was also gathered that men from the fire services of both the federal and state also rushed to the scene of the incident for rescue mission but before their arrival, the inhuman act had been carried out by the deceased.

As at the time of filing this report, reason for the act remains unknown but this might not be unconnected with the current economic problem which has brought untold hardship to citizens of the country because, he was quoted to have said that, he was tired of life because he could no longer afford a square meal per day.

Meanwhile, the NCSDC in a statement made available to newsmen in Osogbo by SC OYEKUNLE OYEBISI, Divisional Officer, Osogbo West said,  “On July 6th, 2024, at exactly 10:30 am, a man name Femi Apatanku,the only son of his parent and a native of ilesha jumped into Gbodofon  River and ended his life.”

According to an eyewitness, “Before he jumped into the river,he kept saying that a group of gang members had beaten him mercilessly at  Finger Linking area of Ogo Oluwa, which led him to decide to end his life”.

“During our investigation, we interviewed a man who witnessed the incident, he mentioned that Apatakuru initially attempted to commit suicide but was chased away and later came back saying his tired of life, shortly after he went to the top of the Gbodofon Bridge and jumped into the river.

“As  at the time of filing this report, the body of the said man has  not been recovered but efforts is on going,” the statement added.
