Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has opened up about the challenges he faced at the beginning of his music career, revealing that only a few people believed in him.
Speaking during an interview with Streetz94.5, a hip-hop radio station in Atlanta, the singer reflected on how his journey began with just the unwavering support of his family and manager.
“Some people did not believe. When I first started, it was literally my family and my manager. A lot of friends that I’ve made now are people that I met along the way.
“Some friends from school believed, but a lot of people didn’t believe,” Davido shared.
He further credited his father’s strong religious values and teachings for guiding him through tough times, despite their different perspectives.
He added, “My dad is very successful, but he’s an elder in the church. I grew up in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. I attended a Christian college.”

The singer recounted moments when personal hardships made him question life’s fairness.
Reflecting on one emotional conversation with his father, he said, “I was like, ‘Why do bad things happen to good people?’ And my dad told me that night, ‘You can’t question God, ever!’ I was like, ‘What do you mean, you can’t question God?”
Though initially skeptical, Davido admitted that time brought clarity.
“A year later, we had twins, the biggest album of my career came, and my first Grammy nominations came.
“Then it started to make sense that He’s listening. Anybody that has heard my story and is going through anything, just know that God has your back,” he stated.
The artist also encouraged others facing challenges to remain hopeful, assuring them that perseverance pays off.
Davido emphasized the importance of having a support system, particularly family.
“It’s very easy to give up, but having good people around is the best. Don’t play with family; the people that will always be there are family,” he said.
