An unspecified number of people have reportedly lost their lives, while many others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a fatal multiple accident in Enugu.

The accident occurred at Ugwu Onyeama on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway on Tuesday, July 11th, around 9 am.

According to reports, the incident occurred when a tanker carrying inflammable products collided head-on with a trailer transporting cement, resulting in a crash that affected other vehicles.

Among the vehicles involved in the crash were a fully loaded GUO bus travelling from Ebonyi State to Lagos, a private car with parents and their young son, and an unmarked bus.

The Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai visited the scene of the accident for an on-the-spot assessment and also visited the hospitals where the injured victims were taken.

Barr. Ossai expressed gratitude to the hospitals for their prompt treatment of the victims and commended the first responders for their efforts in reducing the number of casualties.

“We visited the private clinic at 9th mile where a substantial number of our citizens are hospitalized, and we are also here at the orthopaedic hospital where some of the victims are receiving treatment,” he said.

The deputy governor assured that the government would assist the injured persons in their treatment.

He also highlighted the need to strengthen the institutions responsible for maintaining accident-free roads, emphasizing that some accidents are avoidable. He emphasized the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and training programs for drivers.
