The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) has called on the Federal Government to take urgent and proactive steps to alleviate the hardship and hunger affecting the nation.
Dr Kabiru Sani, President of MHWUN, made this appeal during the Union’s 50th Regular National Executive Council (NEC) session held in Abuja, on Friday.
Dr Sani highlighted the ongoing economic struggles, pointing to persistent hyperinflation, stagnant wages, reduced productivity and the repercussions of widespread unemployment and poverty.
He emphasised that these issues are exacerbating the difficulties faced by ordinary Nigerians.
Dr Sani said: “The situation demands immediate action. The government needs to intensify efforts to mitigate the severe hardship imposed by various policies.
“Engaging with societal groups, including organised labour, is crucial in navigating this crisis. Blame-shifting and finger-pointing will not offer solutions.”
Dr Sani also urged the Minister of Health and Social Welfare to address the deteriorating infrastructure in the country’s health facilities and remove barriers to meet the union’s demands, which are critical for the sector’s improvement.
“The minister must focus on reversing the negative trends that contribute to the brain drain and migration of health workers,” he stated.
Additionally, Dr Sani called for the swift implementation of the new national minimum wage, emphasising the need for prompt and effective adjustments at both state and local government levels.
Former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Ayuba Wabba, also addressed the session, stressing the importance of safeguarding workers’ rights to strengthen democracy.
“Attacks on the fundamental rights of workers are attacks on democracy itself,” Wabba warned.
He urged politicians and political elites to uphold workers’ rights and respect democratic principles.
