DANISH shipping line, Maersk and German carrier, Hapag-Lloyd, have imposed peak season surcharge of $3,000 (about N4.5 million) and $1,000 (about N1.5 million) per twenty equivalent unit (TEU), respectively on containers coming into Nigeria.

This is coming barely three weeks after French shipping line, CMA CGM, imposed $900 per TEU of containers as peak season surcharge on cargoes coming through it from China to Nigeria.

Maersk said its new peak season surcharge will apply to all types of containers, including dry, reefer and special containers coming from the Far East to Nigeria, effective June 1.

The leading container carrier also applied the surcharge on many other ports in West Africa.

On its part, Hapag-Lloyd said its $1,000 per TEU surcharge will apply to containers shipped from Asia to both Apapa and Tin Can Island ports as well as other ports in West, East and Southern Africa.
