A man, Moshood Kani, has pleaded with Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Oja Oba, Ibadan, Oyo State to dissolve the wedlock between him and his wife, Taibat Kani, who he alleged was violent and in the habit of drawing knife at him any time they fought.
Moshood also claimed that his wife is a thief.
According to him, she went away with his belongings.
The plaintiff prayed for the custody of their children whom he said he had been taking care of since his wife deserted him.
Taibat was not in court despite being served court summonses.
Moshood in his testimony said, “My wife and I got married seven years ago.
“We did not carry out any marital rite and I did not pay her bride price.
“If I had known that my wife is crude and rash in her behaviour, I would not have married her.
“I lost my peace the moment she started living with me.
“Taibat always insulted me and flouted my orders at will.
“She refused to give heed to my counsels.
“She was always furious any time I insisted on having my way and would start misbehaving.
“Any time Taibat was angry, she would go for a knife and threaten to stab me with it.
“There were times she brandished cutlass at me.
“I got scared whenever she did this because she could stab me.
“We lived like cat and mouse for the seven years we were together and gradually the love I had for her waned.
“I did not know I was living with a rogue until my wife packed all my belongings and went away with them.
“She left our children behind and ran away to her village.
“My lord, I do not want to have anything to do with my wife again. She is an evil wind that blows no one any good.
“I beseech this court to rule that we are no longer husband and wife.
“I have been looking after the welfare of our children since she left.
“My desire is that they are well read and I have therefore enrolled in a good school and paying their school fees as and when due.
“I, therefore pray for their custody.”
The court president, Mrs S.M Akintayo, adjourned the case till January 31, 2024.
She also ordered that a fresh hearing notice be issued and served the defendant.
