Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State has heard the divorce suit brought before it by a man, Jelili, who claimed that his wife, Sherifat was troublesome and quarrelsome, and always arguing, cursing and fighting him.
According to Jelili, they have been to several police stations and thrice to the court on the account of his wife’s difficult nature.
The plaintiff also said that the defendant was in the habit of beating him and his first wife and raining curses on them.
He further said that she had recently threatened to kill him.
Jelili stated that he had lost his sleep and become an unhappy fellow because of the defendant’s behaviour, which brought him no joy or respite.
Jelili thus begged the court to rule that he and Sherifat are no longer husband and wife.
He also requested for an order restraining her from threatening him or interfering with his private life.
Sherifat pleaded not liable to the charges brought against her.
She also refused that their union be dissolved.
Jelili, in his testimony said, “My wife and I got married in 2011, and I paid her bride price.
“Sherifat stated proving difficult from the outset of our marriage.
“My wife is troublesome and always at loggerheads with me.
“She finds fault in all that I do and raises argument against me.
Sherifat fights me almost all the time and rains curses on me.
“She extended her animosity towards her rival, that is my first wife.
“Sherifat went as far as beating the two of us during a misunderstanding and almost killed us.
“My wife has dented my image in our compound and neighbourhood as a result of her quarrelsome nature.
“Our neighbours have arrested her with the police on several occasions, while this would be my third time of dragging her before the court.
“My wife’s mother does not help matter because she is always taking sides with her.
“Sherifat of recent threatened to kill me.
“I came to court because she could make real her threat.
“My lord, my wife has given me enough sleepIess nights. I no longer want her under my roof.
“I pray that our marriage be dissolved.
“I further request for an order restraining her from threatening me or interfering with my private life.”
The president of the court, Mrs S.M Akintayo, adjourned the case for further hearing.
