In Abuja, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken action against two shops for allegedly selling unapproved products to Nigerian consumers.

The offending shops, located in the Zuba Central motor park and Utako main market, were found to be selling unregistered aphrodisiac products with names such as “Hajiya Ayesha Snuff,” “AK47,” “Bulletproof,” and “Hajiya Aysha Maisanda.”

NAFDAC officials seized the items after receiving intelligence reports about the shops.

NAFDAC’s Deputy Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Tamanuwa Baba, explained that the products contained a potentially harmful chemical called Pyridine, which could cause skin irritation, cancer, and even death.

“NAFDAC laboratory analysis indicates that these products contain a chemical substance called Pyridine which is potentially harmful to the human body,” he said.

“We found a lot of unregistered products in the two shops. We will begin immediate investigations.”

The agency has apprehended the sales representative of the Zuba shop, pending the return of the owner, who is currently on a journey.

NAFDAC will investigate the source of the products and destroy them since they have not been registered by the agency.

In a related development, a similar set of unapproved products was discovered in a shop at Utako known as Kabo Investment Limited.

Baba noted that it was alarming that such products had flooded the Nigerian market and were fast spreading.

“What the sellers are saying is that these products usually make them high, and some said that the product is used as an aphrodisiac,” Baba said.

“I can tell you that Pyridine, which is the chemical that is contained in some of these products, can cause cancer, skin irritation, and even lead to death.”

The incident in Abuja follows a similar operation in Sokoto, where some of these unregistered products were removed from a shop.
