The President of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Haruna Mamman, has expressed his determination to work closely with the governments at all levels in order to improve the welfare of nurses and midwives in Nigeria.

Responding to questions from journalists after being sworn in as the new president of the NANNM in Abuja, Mamman also vowed to focus more on the area of the empowerment and professional growth of all nurses and midwives in the country.

It would be recalled that the NANNM held its delegate conference yesterday, leading to the election of new executives who will pilot the affairs of the association for the next three years.

Mamman, an indigene of Katsina State who contested with the incumbent president of the association, Nurse Michael Nnachi, pulled 99 votes to defeat the former president, who scored 74 votes.

Mamman further reiterated that his administration would also focus on continuing education, training, retraining, and mentorship programme for members, which, according to him, will help the nurses and midwives to perform their professional duties optimally.

He also vowed to work hard to amplify the voices of nurses and midwives in the country and strengthen advocacy for policy change and healthcare reform.

He stressed his preparedness to partner with governments at all levels, collaborate with all critical stakeholders in the health sector, and build bridges between diverse nurses’ groups and specialities in order to grow the health sector and the nursing profession in particular.

“This journey begins today, and I invite each of you to join me in shaping a brighter future for our profession. Let us unite, inspire, and lift one another.

“We cannot accomplish this alone. Therefore, we require the collective support and cooperation of all members of this great association,” Mamman appealed.

Other positions that were also contested during the election were Deputy National President, Vice President 1, 2, 3, and 4, as well as Secretary, Assistant Secretary, and Treasurer.

Other newly elected executives who spoke with journalists vowed to work hard to improve the nursing profession in the country and also improve the relationship between nurses and patients, not minding the harsh working environment of the majority of nurses in most health facilities in the country.
