National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to embark on a mass nationwide protest over the ongoing fuel and electricity crisis in the country.
The students’ body has fixed Tuesday, 7th of May for the protest which will be held simultaneously along the major highways in the various geopolitical zones of the country.
The highways identified by the students are Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, Airport Road Abuja,
Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Onitsha-Asaba Head Bridge, and Bauchi-Jos Road.
The association gave this position in a statement on Tuesday jointly signed by the senate president of NANS, Akinteye Afeez, and five zonal coordinators of NANS, namely: Bilal Lawal Kurfi (Zone A, Northwest), Daniel Friday Egga (Zone C, North Central), Alao John(Zone D, Southwest), Chidi Nzekwe( Zone F, Southeast) and Bappa Hassan Adam(Zone E, Northast).
The students in the statement said the generality of Nigerian students can no longer cope with “the pains inflicted on them and their parents” by the ongoing fuel scarcity and electricity crisis in the country.
They said their primary objective for the protest is to demand the immediate removal of key officials who they believe should be held accountable for the untold hardships.
“So, we are calling for the immediate removal of Mr. Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), and the Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu.
“It is evident to us that their leadership has contributed to the mismanagement and mishandling of vital energy resources, plunging the nation into turmoil.
“So, to amplify our message and ensure widespread participation, we have strategically organised the protest to take place across various zones of the country.
“Each zone will host its demonstration at designated locations to maximize visibility and impact.
“The protest is our collective stand against the systemic failures and neglect that have perpetuated the cycle of hardship and suffering among Nigerian populace.
“So, we firmly believe that the removal of Mr. Mele Kyari and Mr Adabayo Adelabu is essential to address the root causes of the current fuel scarcity and electricity crisis in Nigeria.
“As students’ body, we demand accountability, transparency, and decisive action from the government to alleviate the plight of Nigeria’s students.
“We will like to ask other Nigerians to join us in this protest and stand together in the fight for a brighter future for all.“
