The Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) of the 8 Division, Sokoto, has empowered 115 girls and women with vocational training as part of its commitment to skill acquisition and economic empowerment.
The milestone was marked with the unveiling of the newly remodelled NAOWA Vocational Centre, a project spearheaded by the division’s NAOWA Chairperson, Mrs. Meg Indidi Ajose.
Speaking during the event, the coordinator of the project, Mrs. Anne Omori Tawasimi, commended Mrs. Ajose for her dedication and vision in transforming the facility.
“The centre, prior to its renovation, was not conducive for learning. NAOWA took the bold step to renovate and make it a functional hub for the benefit of the community,” Tawasimi said.
The centre is now equipped to provide training in various vocational skills, including tailoring, catering, and other trades aimed at equipping women with practical knowledge to enhance their livelihoods.
In her remarks, Mrs. Meg Indidi Ajose, who is also the wife of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, highlighted the significance of the initiative, urging youths and women to embrace skill acquisition.
“With the scarcity of white-collar jobs, it is essential for youths and women to equip themselves with vocational skills. This centre is not just for those in the barracks but is open to the larger Sokoto metropolis. I encourage everyone to make full use of this opportunity,” Ajose said.
She also advised trainees to utilize the provided resources and knowledge responsibly, ensuring their skills translate into sustainable income-generating activities.
The event featured vibrant traditional dances performed by various ethnic groups, underscoring the cultural diversity of the community. It concluded with the presentation of gifts to Mrs. Ajose, Mrs. Tawasimi, and other notable contributors to the project.
The initiative reflects NAOWA’s ongoing efforts to empower women and promote economic self-reliance through vocational training and capacity-building programs.
