On Thursday, the Benin Zonal Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) arraigned a 35-year-old man, Mr Ken Kilo (also known as Kingsley Egharevba) at the National Industrial Court in Benin for his alleged involvement in human trafficking.

According to reports, Kilo was arraigned on two counts for allegedly aiding one Nifemi Afolabi (also known as Halima), who is currently at large, in organizing foreign travel for a victim with the intention of forcing them into prostitution in Libya.

NAPTIP counsel, Mrs Oburoh Victoria Okanigbuan, stated that the offences committed by the suspect are contrary to and punishable under Section 18 and Section 14(b) respectively of the Trafficking in Persons Prohibition Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015. The offences are said to have been committed in Benin City in October 2019.

During the court proceedings, the suspect pleaded not guilty when the charges were read before him.

The presiding judge, Justice A. A Adewemimo, adjourned the case to June 15, 2023, for hearing and ordered that the suspect continues with his administrative bail pending when the application for his bail is formally filed before the court.
