The National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his transformative leadership in reviving the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC), describing it as a major milestone in Nigeria’s energy sector.

In a statement issued yesterday, NCSCN’s Executive Director, Blessing Akinlosotu, described the resumption of operations at PHRC as a “landmark achievement” with far-reaching benefits for the country’s economy and energy security.

According to Akinlosotu, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) kept its promise by achieving the first loading of petroleum products from the refinery after years of inactivity.

“We acknowledge President Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to reforming and transforming the petroleum sector. This milestone represents a significant step toward Nigeria’s economic recovery,” Akinlosotu stated.

He also praised the NNPC Ltd. Board, led by Chief Pius Akinyelure, and its management team, headed by Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) Mallam Mele Kyari, for their dedication to revitalising the refinery.

The Port Harcourt refinery is currently operating at 70% capacity, with plans to increase output to 90%. Its daily production includes:

  • 1.4 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS),
  • 900,000 litres of Household Kerosene (HHK),
  • 1.5 million litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and
  • 2.1 million litres of Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO).

These output levels are expected to significantly reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported petroleum products, stabilise supply, and ensure affordability for citizens, according to the NCSCN.

Akinlosotu also highlighted NNPC Ltd.’s record-breaking financial performance, with the corporation surpassing its revenue target and posting ₦14 trillion—the highest in its history. He urged the company to extend its achievements by resuming operations at the Kaduna and Warri refineries to further boost the nation’s refining capacity.

The NCSCN reiterated its commitment to collaborating with the government and stakeholders to ensure Nigeria’s energy security. It also emphasised the importance of unity, constructive criticism, and optimism in driving the nation’s development.

“We urge Nigerians to appreciate these advancements, as significant transformations take time. Constructive criticism and collective effort are essential to fostering sustainable progress,” the statement concluded.
