The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting inclusive development and social inclusion to address the challenges facing persons with disabilities in the Niger Delta region.
This is just as the commission distributed about 300 assistive items, which include bicycles, walking canes, walking frames, mobility aids, visual aids (magnifying glasses), Braille books, crutches and Wheelchairs were distributed to persons with disabilities.
Speaking during the distribution, the Managing Director of the commission, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, who made this pledge during the distribution of essential mobility and assistive devices to support individuals with disabilities in Igbokoda, in Ilaje local government area of Ondo state.
He disclosed that the NDDC programme was in collaboration with Tamzats Services Ltd, to marked the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, with the theme “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,”
He said the event underscored the importance of equal opportunities, leadership, and the integration of persons with disabilities into all aspects of society.
Speaking through the Ondo state representative in the commission, Hon Otito Thompson Atikase, Oguku said the event ” is part of the commissions broader commitment to social intervention and community development.
“The NDDC recognizes the struggles faced by persons with disabilities, and we are dedicated to finding sustainable solutions.
“We are providing mobility aids such as wheelchairs and walking frames to those who face mobility challenges. We are also distributing visual aids, including magnifying glasses, as well as hearing aids for those with hearing impairments.
“These devices will not only improve their mobility and communication but also enhance their economic and social participation. Our goal is to reduce social inequalities and provide support where it is most needed.
“Society encompasses all spheres of life. It should never exclude individuals simply because they possess a particular talent or face physical challenges. Everyone has a role to play in society, and no one should be ignored or marginalized.
“We must avoid attaching psychological implications to physical challenges. In many cases, persons with disabilities contribute more positively to society than some able-bodied individuals.
“While some able-bodied people may pose security risks, those with disabilities often focus on finding solutions—both for themselves and for the community at large. Because of this, we have no choice but to ensure that people with disabilities are fully included in our programs.

“With our collective cooperation, we are committed to: caring for people’s physical well-being, addressing mental health needs, improving environmental condition, supporting social development, enhancing economic opportunities and investing in infrastructure.
The Acting state Director of NDDC, Asonye Victor, said that “the assistive items ” will not only improve their mobility and communication but also enhance their economic and social participation.
Asonye said “This initiative is not a one-time event; it will continue periodically so that more people can benefit in the future.
“We remain committed to working closely with organizations representing persons with disabilities to ensure continuous support”
The President of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Ondo State Chapter, Abiodun Samuel Olusegun,appreciated the efforts of NDDC and the support extended to persons with disabilities.
Olusegun pleaded with the commission to prioritize employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, establishment of vocational training centers in each local government, construction of a permanent office space for the association on a designated plot of land, health insurance for persons with disabilities, increase in number of beneficiaries of scholarships and educational support, contract awards and community projects, accessibility in tertiary institutions
Also speaking, the consultant, who is the project manager of Tamzats Services Ltd, Victor Akene, said that the assertive items ” are provided to enhance the independence and mobility of individuals with disabilities in our society.
“Many beneficiaries struggle with mobility and vision, and this initiative aims to empower them by providing essential aids.
“The objective of this exercise is to support and uplift persons with disabilities, ensuring they have access to tools that enhance their quality of life.
We remain committed to enhancing the lives of persons with disabilities through mobility aids, educational support, and ongoing initiatives.
