Registration of unemployed people in Delta State has commenced courtesy of National Directorate of Employment (NDE).
The purpose of the registration, according to the state’s coordinator of the directorate, Mr Sylvanus Onyeogo, is to obtain and maintain a data bank of unemployed people that will aid national planning.
The exercise which is taking place simultaneously across the 36 states and Abuja, Mr Onyeogo said is free and open to all categories of applicants irrespective of their academic qualifications.
He said though the registration is not a ticket for employment, applicants could be linked with available vacancies in both government and private sectors just as the exercise will enable the Federal Government to know those interested in vocational skills acquisition.
When Nigerian Tribune visited the NDE’s office at the federal secretariat on Okpanam road in Asaba, scores of unemployed persons were seen going through the process.
Similarly, the exercise which is expected to end on Friday is also taking place at the 25 local government areas of the state.
Respondents at Ogwashi-Uku in Aniocha South Local Government Area of the state said the exercise at the council was recording a low turnout of unemployed people due to lack of enough information, suggesting that NDE should take the campaign to religious places, markets and other strategic places.
