The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano has announced a strategic partnership with Mazaje Traditional Sport Promotion Limited to curb the growing menace of drug abuse in the state.
This initiative will harness the influence of traditional boxing, known locally as dambe, to sensitize youths and promote a drug-free society.

According to NDLEA’s spokesperson on Saturday, Mr. Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, the partnership was revealed following a courtesy visit to the agency by the King of Traditional Boxing, Sarkin Damben Nigeria, Bashir Muhammad-Danliti, as part of activities ahead of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26.

The NDLEA’s Strategic Commander, Mr. Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, represented by Maimuna Garba, emphasized the importance of using familiar cultural platforms to pass life-saving messages.
“As we approach the UNODC day, the NDLEA Strategic Command calls on all stakeholders and members of the public to support this initiative,” he said.
“Together, we can create a lasting impact in the fight against drug abuse and promote a culture of wellness and resilience in our communities.”
Muhammad-Danliti praised NDLEA for its efforts and called for deeper collaboration, stressing that many security issues stem from drug-related offenses.
“We will continue to work with the agency to tackle the root causes of drug abuse and prevent same from spreading in the state,” he added.
The partnership will include awareness campaigns and sporting events to engage young people and the wider public, reinforcing the NDLEA’s mission to create a drug-free society.
