The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has pledged to address the myriad environmental challenges plaguing the North-East region, including desertification, pollution, climate change, and the shrinking of Lake Chad.
This commitment was made by NEDC Managing Director Mohammed Alkali during a visit to the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) in N’Djamena, Chad.
The North-East region’s vast landmass, coupled with desertification, pollution, climate change, and Lake Chad’s shrinking, has led to food insecurity, and property damage, and undermined the region’s primary livelihood activities: agriculture and trade.
Alkali emphasized the similarities between LCBC’s strategies for recovering the Lake Chad basin and NEDC’s regional recovery plan.
The NEDC views LCBC as a strategic partner, given their significant impact on the North-East states.
With sustainable development in focus, the commission aims to tackle environmental challenges through its North East Stabilization and Development Master Plan.
By addressing desertification, pollution, climate change, and Lake Chad’s shrinking, NEDC seeks to enhance residents’ quality of life and promote sustainable development.
This initiative is vital, considering the region’s environmental challenges and their impact on agriculture, trade, and food security.
The NEDC’s efforts align with global concerns about environmental degradation, deforestation, and climate change, necessitating collective action and strategic partnerships.
