The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has pledged to immediately intervene in the reconstruction of roads and bridges damaged by recent flooding in Yobe State.
Managing Director of the commission, Mohammed Alkali, made the promise during an on-the-spot assessment visit to affected areas in Garin Gada town, Nangare Local Government Area of the state, on Monday.
Alkali noted that the recent torrential flooding in most towns in Yobe had wreaked havoc, with critical infrastructure severely damaged. He listed Kaliyari town, Nguru, among other areas, where roads and culverts were damaged, while the roadway between Katarko and Gujba was also affected, leaving communities isolated.
The NEDC boss explained that the commission’s intervention would focus on rebuilding critical infrastructure, providing relief materials, and supporting affected communities. “We are committed to providing both short-term and long-term solutions to the flooding problem, as many people were displaced and critical infrastructure damaged,” he said.
Alkali assured that the commission would work closely with other stakeholders and the communities to ensure that affected areas receive the necessary support. He added that the NEDC’s support would be crucial in rebuilding livelihoods and restoring economic activities in affected areas.”
