Public primary and secondary school students in Oyo State are not paying a dime as school fees to the purse of Oyo State government. This is a great relief for parents whose children attend public schools in Oyo State. The state government is also paying the salaries of its teachers regularly. It is, however, very disturbing to see some public school students of Oyo State loafing around the streets of Ibadan during school hours.
Instead of these students to take maximum advantage of not paying school fees to stay in the classroom and face their studies, they deliberately choose to abandon the classroom and roam the streets of Ibadan during school hours.
Public school authorities in Oyo State have a lot of work to do by inviting the parents of any unserious student who won’t stay in class during school hours for questioning. It is said that charity begins at home. The Oyo State government under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde should return discipline to public schools. There is no discipline as some teachers are even afraid of punishing recalcitrant students.
Let’s get our students who are roaming the streets of Ibadan back to the classroom. Government must not close its eyes to these students who don’t stay in the classroom.
