The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) on Wednesday sealed six company facilities in Oyo and Ogun States for violating environmental laws. The companies were sealed for failing to comply with environmental regulations after receiving warning letters asking them to take the necessary steps to comply.
The affected companies in Ibadan, Oyo State, are Polyfilm Packaging Nigeria Limited, Bentos Pharmaceuticals Limited. In Ogun State, Greenpak Specialties Ltd, Arepo; Kaltani International Ventures Ltd; Jics Industries Nigeria Ltd and Ruili Technology Ltd, all on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, were affected.
The exercise was carried out by NESREA teams from the national headquarters, zonal office and the Oyo State field office.
Commenting on the exercise, Mr Toyin Obagiri, the state coordinator, Oyo State field office, said: “The facilities were sealed for non-compliance with environmental standards and laws having served them letters on three or more consecutive times.”
Infractions include environmental impact assessment violation, non-construction of an effluent treatment plant for waste generated from the facility, among others.
Obagiri advised companies to “always adhere to environmental protection standards.” He said, “The law says that before you touch the land when establishing a facility, you must conduct an environmental impact assessment on that land. Once we get there and discover that there is no EIA, we sanction you.
“For those engaging in wet process, it is advised you construct an effluent treatment plant that will treat the wastewater before discharging it into the environment.”
