Nestlé Nigeria has started the process of remodelling its operations to weather the harsh business climate in the country and stay atop the food and beverage category at a time when some companies are winding down their operations.

The move by Nestlé Nigeria to stay ahead of its competitors is coming at a time when world leaders will join forces to deliberate on climate change and the actions needed to curtail global warming at COP 28.

To this end, the company will this week officially present to the public the new Nestlé Pure Life bottles,, now including 50 per cent recycled PET (rPET).

Being conscious of its position as the leading food and beverage company in Nigeria, the firm said Nestlé’s ambition is to achieve 100 per cent recyclable or reusable packaging by the year 2025.

“We are also committed to increasing the volume of rPET we use across our brands globally to 50 per cent. This attainment of 50 per cent rPET in our water bottles is, therefore, an important milestone in line with our commitments,” the company said.

Nestlé Nigeria added, “We are delighted to be the first to achieve 50 per cent rPET inclusion in our water bottles. This effectively reduces the use of virgin plastics in our packaging by 50 per cent and ensures the last mile on our journey towards plastics circularity in Nigeria”.

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is a type of resin and a form of polyester; it is commonly labelled with the code on or near the bottom of bottles and other containers. PET has some important characteristics, such as its strength, thermostability, gas barrier properties,, and transparency.

rPET is recycled polyethylene terephthalate. It is made of recycled PET that can come from either post-consumer or post-industrial sources.

The attainment of 50 per cent rPET in its water bottles is, therefore, an important milestone in line with Nestlé’s commitments to a safe environment.
