A Katsina-based NGO has urged the Federal Government to investigate potential foreign involvement in the internal affairs of the country.

The call was made on Friday in a statement by the coalition of civil society groups in Katsina State, under the auspices of the Katsina Concerned Citizens for Good Governance (KCCGG).

In the statement, the coalition chairman, Comrade Yakubu Mohammed, expressed deep concern over recent incidents involving foreign nationals that threaten the sovereignty and integrity of Nigeria.

The group highlighted incidents involving individuals who have been arrested for actions potentially harmful to Nigeria, including those who displayed disrespect by raising foreign flags, notably the Russian flag, while desecrating the Nigerian flag.

These actions, according to the group, pose a direct threat to the peace, security, and values of Nigeria, underscoring the need for a decisive response to uphold national dignity and sovereignty.

“Sovereignty is not merely a theoretical concept but a critical foundation upon which Nigeria’s political stability, economic development, and social cohesion rest,” the statement read.

The coalition further noted that recent encroachments by external forces, whether through political manipulation or covert operations, pose significant threats to this foundational principle.

“Foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs manifests in various ways, with the primary aim being to destabilize the country’s political, economic, and social coexistence landscape. Such actions not only erode national sovereignty but also exacerbate existing insecurity and development challenges.”

The statement also mentioned that recent developments in the country, particularly following national protests, present serious threats to Nigeria as a nation.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the coalition is disturbed by the involvement of some youths, believed to be foreign nationals from neighboring countries, in the recent protests.

The group, therefore, called on the federal government to investigate and prosecute all foreign nationals arrested in connection with these activities, as doing so would demonstrate Nigeria’s zero tolerance for threats to its national sovereignty.

Additionally, the coalition urged the government to review and enhance existing security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, monitor the activities of foreign nationals and their governments, and improve security around sensitive national symbols and infrastructure.

The Katsina Coalition also called for government-led enlightenment campaigns aimed at educating both citizens and foreigners about the importance of respecting Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Furthermore, they urged the government to engage diplomatic missions in Nigeria to ensure they understand the seriousness of these actions and work towards preventing future occurrences.
