The Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS), has hinted of a new set of rules for its professional members.
The body is also said to be intensifying its drive towards a regulated feed and livestock industry in the country for the improvement of feed/food safety.
Speaking at the induction of about 1,200 (one thousand and two hundred) new Graduate Animal Scientists (GAS), into the body, Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute, Professor Eustace Ayamere Iyayi, said the move was aimed at quality and enhanced access to national and international markets.
He spoke at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, venue of the event adding that the Nigeria’s feed industry is currently being mobilised by NIAS to embrace the FAO/IFIF Code of Practice for Good Animal Feeding and other Codex standards on traceability, contaminants and HACCP.
According to him, “NIAS in recognising the place of regulation in improving trade, market access and competitiveness, has rolled out regulations on Animal Science practice; breeder farms, hatchery and day-old chick quality, hatchery operators, regulation for the feed milling industry; as well as, animal handling, meat processing and distribution in abattoirs and slaughter slabs in the country”.
He added that the draft regulation on good animal husbandry practice for poultry operators in Nigeria is yet to be gazetted.
In appreciating LAUTECH for playing host to new Graduate Animal Scientists from 18 Institutions across the country that came for the physical version of the induction, the Registrar, said NIAS will continue to do the best in its capacity to advance the course of its members.
Those who converged at the induction where LAUTECH contributed about 600 new GAS included a representative of the Acting Vice-Chancellor of LAUTECH, Professor Tunde Joseph Ogunkunle, Dean of Agriculture, Professor Samuel Adelani Babarinde, Head of Animal Nutrition and Biotechnology, Professor Olusegun Ojeniyi Ojebiyi and Head of Animal Production and Health, Professor Rafiu Tirimisiyu Adewale.
