Nigeria and the United Kingdom have strengthened their partnership in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East region.

The UK Minister of State for Defence, Lord Vernon Coaker, made this known during a visit to the headquarters of the Theatre Command Operation Hadin Kai in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Wednesday.

According to Lord Coaker, the UK views Nigeria as a crucial ally and friend, with both countries sharing fundamental values such as the rule of law, respect for borders, democracy, and human rights.

He acknowledged the challenges Nigeria faces in combating terrorism and commended the country’s efforts in tackling the threat, particularly through Operation Hadin Kai.

“The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to combat terrorism, particularly in the North-East region,” Lord Coaker stated.

The minister also emphasised the importance of collaboration and mutual learning between the two countries, citing the success of training programmes and the provision of equipment to support Nigeria’s counter-insurgency efforts.

“We are committed to continuing our support for Nigeria, recognising the country’s leadership role in the region and its importance as a partner in addressing common security challenges,” Lord Coaker said.

The Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force (NE) Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Waidi Shaibu, highlighted the long-standing cordial relationship between Nigeria and the UK.

Shaibu noted that the mandate of the JTF (NE) OPHK includes restoring normalcy in the North-East region and supporting the civil authority to reestablish an enabling environment for citizens to return to normal life.

“The UK’s support has included the provision of counter-IED equipment and the establishment of a Counter IED Coordination Cell, which has helped to develop intelligence and dismantle insurgent networks.

The British Defence Staff (West Africa) has made significant contributions to the JTF’s efforts, particularly in counter-insurgency and training in the North-East region,” he said.
