Governor of Imo State, Chief Hope Uzodinma, has emphasized the need for Nigeria to shift from a dependence on oil to skill acquisition for its youth, asserting that this transition is essential for empowering the next generation of leaders.
He made this call while delivering the inaugural convocation lecture at Ojaja University, Eyenkorin, Ilorin, on Saturday.
In his lecture, titled “The Role of Private Universities in Growing Skilled Labour for a Resilient Nigerian Economy,” Uzodinma stated that the future of Nigeria “lies not in the oil beneath our soil, but in the potent skills and knowledge up in our skills.”
He highlighted that in today’s world, human capital holds more value than mineral deposits like crude oil or gold.
Uzodinma urged private universities to play a pivotal role in bridging vocational training and skill acquisition, enabling Nigeria’s youth to achieve total independence both now and in the future.
He stressed the importance of higher education in building a skilled workforce capable of adapting to the changing demands of the economy.

“Private universities have a pivotal role to play in incubating these potentials,” he remarked, noting that these institutions can foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and knowledge that will benefit future generations.
Uzodinma also charged the management of Ojaja University and other private institutions to see themselves as nation-builders. “You are not just educators; you are nation-builders,” he stated, emphasizing the impact of their work on the nation’s resilience.
He called on governments and stakeholders to provide support for private universities, advocating for a collaborative approach to create an educational ecosystem that aligns with industry needs.
“The task ahead is not easy, but it is noble. Together, we can harness the power of education to build a workforce that is not just skilled but visionary,” he concluded.
Additionally, the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, encouraged the graduating students to view themselves as representatives of the entire nation in their future endeavors.
The Vice Chancellor of Ojaja University, Professor Jeleel Olasunkanmi Ojuade, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to providing a well-rounded education that encompasses historical and cultural heritage.
He expressed confidence that the university’s 13 accredited courses would equip students to excel in their future pursuits.
