The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), recently announced its readiness to introduce an innovative national identity card. While some may consider it a welcome development, many Nigerians are wondering what necessitated another national ID card due to a series of challenges faced as a result of National Identification Number (NIN) policies.

In this article, we explored five unique features of the new National Identity Card as disclosed by the NIMC:

1. National Identity Card

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), in collaboration with other governmental bodies, has introduced a multifunctional National Identity Card. This card is mandated by the NIMC Act of 2007 and serves as a General Multipurpose Card (GMPC) for both Nigerian citizens and legal residents. It provides a tangible means for individuals to prove their identity and access various government and private services.

2. Integration with Financial Services

The National Identity Card is not merely an identification tool but also functions as a payment card. By partnering with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS), the card is equipped with payment functionalities. This integration aims to enhance financial inclusion, allowing disenfranchised Nigerians to access banking services and participate more actively in the economy.

3. Eligibility through National Identification Number (NIN):

To obtain the National Identity Card, individuals must be registered with the National Identification Number (NIN) provided by NIMC. This requirement ensures that only registered citizens and legal residents can access the card and its associated benefits.

4. Security and Data Protection

The National Identity Card adheres to international standards on data security and privacy. NIMC emphasizes its commitment to protecting cardholders’ personal information and complying with data protection regulations. Security features such as biometric authentication (fingerprint and picture) and encrypted chip technology safeguard users’ data from unauthorized access.

5. Versatile Usage and Accessibility

Apart from serving as an identity and payment card, the National Identity Card will offer additional functionalities such as travel, health insurance information, microloans, and access to government subsidies. It is designed to cater to both banked and unbanked individuals, promoting financial inclusivity. Additionally, the card can be requested online, at commercial banks, various agencies, or NIMC offices nationwide, ensuring accessibility to a wide range of users.
