The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has thrown its weight behind Julius Abure, affirming him as the National Chairman of the Labour Party, despite a recent court order suspending him and other top officials from office.
The High Court in Abuja had on Wednesday suspended Abure alongside the National Secretary, National Treasurer and the Publicity Secretary of the party.
The NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, in a statement, expressed great suspicion over the court’s decision, alleging that it was aimed at weakening the party from within and distracting it from reclaiming its victories at the polls.
He urged the court to exercise caution in entertaining frivolous suits and spurious prayers from mercenary party members, as such actions could compromise the integrity of the courts.
Ajaero further decried the violation of the principle of presumption of innocence, which is a fundamental pillar of the judicial system, and called for a review of the decision.
He also noted that the continued relevance of the courts depended on the quality of their decisions and rulings, and urged them to refrain from taking actions that could make them appear as though they had descended into the arena.
“The quartet, therefore, remains executives of the party. In light of the foregoing, we invite the honourable court to review its decision forthwith,” Ajaero added. He concluded by noting that the NLC would be present in court in large numbers on the next adjourned date to listen to the judge.
