The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed sorrow over the tragic EastWind Aviation helicopter crash on October 24. This incident claimed the lives of eight Nigerian workers who were en route to the FPSO NUIM ANTAN offshore facility from Port Harcourt to Calabar.
The workers, on duty for the nation, lost their lives while contributing to Nigeria’s economic progress, marking yet another painful reminder of the sacrifices Nigerian workers make daily, said a statement by NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.

The NLC underscored that this tragedy highlights the dangerous conditions faced by Nigerian workers and the urgent need to improve health and safety measures. “No worker should face death or injury as a consequence of simply doing their job,” the NLC stated, calling on the Government and Occupational Safety and Health authorities to intensify efforts in ensuring the safety of workplaces and transport avenues.
With a strong message of concern, the NLC addressed the lack of enforcement of safety standards, especially in high-risk industries like offshore oil and gas. The Congress emphasised that stringent compliance, comprehensive safeguard and a shared commitment from both employers and regulatory agencies are essential for safeguarding workers in such hazardous environments.
Labeling tragedy as an “accident” should not diminish its significance, the NLC argued. Instead, it serves as a critical reminder of the need for reliable flight equipment, effective communication channels, and efficient search-and-rescue operations. The Congress urged relevant aviation and oil and gas agencies to prioritize these areas, stressing that only through rigorous safety frameworks can future tragedies be prevented.
The NLC also demanded a thorough federal investigation into the causes of the crash. They expressed hope that a comprehensive inquiry would uncover valuable lessons, ultimately leading to stronger protections for Nigerian workers.
In a heartfelt message, the NLC extended its condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, particularly affiliates NUPENG (Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers) and NAAPE (National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers), who lost valued members. “We pray for strength and comfort for all those grieving,” the NLC stated, adding that the Congress stands with the entire nation in mourning this profound loss.
Comrade Joe Ajaero further reaffirmed NLC’s commitment to advocating for enhanced workplace safety. “Only by championing these values can we prevent future tragedies and truly honor the memory of those we have lost,” he stated.
“This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the urgent reforms needed to protect the lives of workers, ensuring they can contribute to the nation’s growth without putting their lives at undue risk.”
