The leadership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has secured an interim injunction from a Federal Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) against a faction of the party from electing parallel executives at the national and state levels to run the affairs of the party.

The national leadership of NNPP loyal to the presidential candidate of the party in the 2023 election, Dr Musa Kwankwaso and the camp camp loyal to the founder of the party, Dr Boniface Aniebonam have been embroiled in a power struggle over the control of the structure of the party founded in 2022.

In a suit No.FCT/HC/CV/5518/2024, the court barred members of the group led by Aneibonam from parading themselves as members of the NNPP, as well as holding congresses and a national convention to elect new officers.

A copy of the order was made available to the Nigerian Tribune in Ibadan on Thursday, by the national publicity secretary of the party, Ladipo Johnson, who stated that those behind the plan were no longer members of the NNPP.

Johnson said Aniebonam and other party chieftains in his camp were expelled by the NNPP long ago, accusing them of being used by opposition parties by “towing their line on issues and attempting to confuse the public about the rightful leadership, logo, and colors of the New Nigeria Peoples Party.”

The NNPP spokesman explained that, “The order of the court also restrains them, their agents, or servants from carrying out or undertaking any official activity for and on behalf of, or in the name of the NNPP.

“Similarly, the court restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from receiving or replying to any correspondence from them or monitoring their illegal congresses.

“We are aware that these former members are being used to attempt to distract us. However, the party hopes that they will appear in court so that their illegal use of the party’s name can be brought to an end,” Johnson claimed.
