The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) has reassured Abuja residents that there is no need for alarm following recent tremors in Mpape, a suburb in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Director-General of NGSA, Professor Olusegun Ige, stated that the agency is monitoring the situation closely and has found the tremors to be low in intensity, posing no significant threat to the environment.

According to Ige, NGSA’s monitoring station at Katampe recorded multiple ground motions starting on September 13, 2024, with increasing intensity and frequency over the following days.

A series of mild tremors were observed, with over 21 events captured on September 15, and more than 20 on September 16.

NGSA’s assessment concluded that the tremors are caused by accumulated stress along identified fault lines, releasing seismic energy.

The affected areas, such as Mpape, Katampe, and Maitama, are advised not to panic as these tremors are classified as low-level, ranging between III-IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale.

NGSA will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed, assuring the public that the seismic stations are being monitored in real time to ensure prompt alerts for any significant developments.
